Four issues back on the magazine side of self-titled, we ran a feature that poked fun at ‘trend pieces’ like Stereogum’s “18 Dark Bands To Watch in 2011.” Our spin was simple: let’s ask three of our favorite goth-y artists what makes them smile. Because even Cure fans have their good days right? Their answers were spot on, starting with Cult of Youth frontman Sean Ragon, who examined the meaning of happiness with such priceless lines as “These days I feel as though I have a place in this world, and I actually feel normal as I go about my daily business. That’s a happiness I wouldn’t trade for a thousand kittens or a million blow jobs.”
That sense of purpose carries over to the band’s new album, Love Will Prevail (Sacred Bones, September 4th), which sheds any lingering sense of doom and gloom for tasteful nods to the Velvet Underground, Miles Davis and Crass.
