The law firm-like name of Standish/Carlyon actually refers to two-thirds of the dearly missed Australian band the Devastations. While that trio got dealt many Nick Cave comparisons, their last album (2007’s Yes, U) actually had more in common with what singer/bassist Conrad Standish and guitarist/sound sculptor Tom Carlyon are doing now–synth-powered, rhythmic descents into the underbelly of a world where the curtains are shut and everything seems to be bathed in acid rain and neon. Don’t let the funk-infused bass licks of “Nono Yoyo” fool you; there’s something sinister afloat here.
Deleted Scenes is due out May 14th through Felte.
