If the name Rashad Becker looks familiar, it’s probably because he’s had his hands on nearly every record that matters at Basic Channel’s Dubplates & Mastering plant for the past 15 years. Seriously–the guy’s got more than a thousand technical credits listed over at Discogs, from sub-aquatic Monolake singles to recent albums from Pantha Du Prince, Stellar OM Source, and Brandt Brauer Frick.
Being one of the most sought-after names in the mastering business has meant having little time for his own work, however, which is why current Label of the Month PAN has pushed Becker to complete Traditional Music of Notional Species Vol. I. Due out later this month, it’s as much of a mouthful sonically as that title suggests, pushing two separate sides of “themes” and “dances” through a meat grinder.
