Benoît Pioulard, Précis (Kranky, 2006)
While we still have no idea what Thomas Meluch’s main project is named after, or why it requires an SEO-wrecking accent mark, Benoît Pioulard’s first proper LP presents the singer/multi-instrumentalist’s fully formed idea of partly cloudy pop. It’s drone-y, delicate, and in serious danger of floating off into the distance like a lonely red balloon, and yet it’s also not the least bit cliched or cloying. Beautiful stuff, really.
