Amid discovering great bands (Warpaint, whoa!) and getting beer sprayed in our faces (thanks, Duchess Says) this past week, self-titled hosted a CMJ event on Friday at Manhattan’s (Le) Poisson Rouge. Delorean opened the night–another installment of our Oscillations parties presented alongside Pop Mart Media–with punchily effervescent mini-raves (sign these dudes up for a Phoenix supporting slot ASAP). Holly Miranda stripped her tracks down to their bare essentials, performing on guitar with only another guitarist in accompaniment and letting her stunning voice soak in the spotlight. Cymbals Eat Guitars singer Joseph D’Agostino drenched the stage in buckets of sweat while channeling the ferocious, heart-on-sleeve intensity of Tim Kasher. And closing out the evening, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson–who cracked that he inhaled a liter of D’Agostino’s sweat when he stepped up to the mic–tore through much of his new record, Summer of Fear, with a serious Boss complex, jumping around the stage and reaching back briefly for an uproarious rendition of “Buriedfed.” Robinson’s set was so phenomenal, in fact, that self-titled overheard people recounting its epicness at another party later in the evening.
