The Necks
Vertigo
(Northern Spy, 2015)
Ambient jazz that alternates between a steady, album-length drone and the queasy sounds of tickled keyboard tones, sputtering drum lines, and dueling counter-melodies. Even the quietest passages maintain the moody, lingering sense that something’s about to go wrong, too, as if the Australian trio was treating this record (their 18th full-length) like a spectral film score. Hell, if we were making a horror movie, we’d hire them.
