Scuba has revealed three new records tied to the 10th anniversary of his influential SUB:STANCE party and the producer’s own debut album, A Mutual Antipathy. The latter will receive a remastered and expanded reissue next Friday, setting the stage for two separate compilations that capture that particular era in the underground clubs and shops of Berlin. (SUB:STANCE’s Berghain residency was actually wrapped in 2013.)
Up first on November 2nd: SUB:STANCE in Retrograde, featuring 10 long-lost Scuba pieces from 2008-2010 that remind us all of when dubstep wasn’t a dirty word. Or as Scuba put it, “I was trawling through a load of old hard drives from back around then and was surprised at how much good music there was that I hadn’t heard in years. Finished tracks as well, not just ideas.”
A similar spirit informs Sounds of SUB:STANCE, an extensive collection of rare and unreleased material from such like-minded folks as Shackleton, Vex’d, Untold, Mala, Skream, and Peverelist. “It’s a really interesting musical period,” explains Scuba, “and quite singular in that it wasn’t around for long and was very concentrated. But there was so much cool stuff to come out of it, and I hope people will dig deeper after checking out these releases.”
