Photography OLGA OZIERANSKA
In case you can’t tell by the nervous energy that drives her new album Dancing, Aleksandra Grünholz has felt a little restless as of late. Mostly because she has to balance her brash We Will Fail project with a full-time gig at the helm of a heady graphic design studio in Warsaw.
“Last year was very hard for me,” she explains. “The amount of work started to overwhelm me and make me feel possessed—like I have no time or energy left.”
Not that you’d notice in the midst of such manic beats and sharp melodies. From the lumbering bass lines of “Very Urgent” to the skittish percussion of “Diving in Plastic,” it’s as if the record is reclaiming everything Grünholz lost over the years, especially the ecstatic nature of her rave-on roots.
“I don’t dance anymore,” she says. “I don’t party; I don’t let myself go. Some time ago that part of life slipped away from me. This album is like silently entering into a place you shouldn’t be in.”
As a postscript to the producer’s third LP, Grünholz made us a WORK WORK WORK playlist. Have a listen below, followed by a complete stream of Dancing….
1. ZEITKRATZER & TERRE THAEMLITZ – DOWN HOME KAMI SAKUNOBE
This track is an absolute anthem about working and capitalism for me. It is dense and energetic throughout, speeding you up and making you wanna go and give your best. “But all the work was already gone….”
2. PEPE BRADOCK – RHAPSODY IN PAIN
This second track is more general, but it’s played a lot in our graphic design studio, especially after being contacted by a disappointed customer.
3. AMNESIA SCANNER – WANT IT
I love Amnesia Scanner’s entire AS EP. Listening to such music while working gives me some distance and helps me prepare visual jobs for corporations.
4. V/VM WHAM – LAST CHRISTMAS
Well, this track should make you want to work, buy and indulge more at this special time (last quarter) of the year.
5. MARIE DAVIDSON – WORK IT
[Marie Davidson’s] Working Class Woman [album] came out recently. It has really great energy. I like this track; it’s totally filled with anger and power.
