Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel has revealed his ongoing struggle with gender dysphoria and plans to take on the name and identity of one Laura Jane Grace. Speaking to Rolling Stone in their upcoming issue, Gabel said, “The most terrifying thing about this was how [my wife] would accept the news. But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”
That support will be crucial in the coming months as he begins to undergo electrolysis treatments and hormone replacement therapy. Having spent a considerable amount of time interviewing former Cretin frontman Dan (now Marissa) Martinez for Decibel about his own transgenderism, all we can say is that Gabel’s decision should not be taken lightly. Transitioning from a man into a woman isn’t as simple as applying makeup or changing one’s wardrobe; it’s a costly, mentally exhausting process, one that takes years to fully embrace.
