Broadcast co-founder James Cargill has revealed the details behind his first proper project since the death of his bandmate/partner Trish Keenan. Now showing in UK theaters, Berberian Sound Studio is the story of how “a sound engineer’s work for an Italian horror studio becomes a terrifying case of life imitating art.” In a fitting twist, Cargill produced the imaginary score for The Equestrian Vortex alongside members of Nurse With Wound (Steven Stapleton), Morphogenesis (Clive Graham), Sculpture (Dan Hayhurst) and Broadcast’s original band (keyboardist Roj Stevens).
“The awkward Brit sound recordist working in a claustrophobic Italian studio was a fantastic synopsis,” Cargill said of the plot, “and the ideas [director] Peter [Strickland] had for sound and music in the film were fascinating:that we would be creating the soundtrack for the ‘film within the film’ was quite appealing.”
