Avey Tare has recruited former members of Dirty Projectors (Angel Deradoorian) and Ponytail (Jeremy Hyman) for a new “cannibalistic” band called Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks. The name isn’t a surprise considering Tare’s last solo LP (2010’s Down There) was partially inspired by a Tobe Hooper film about a murderous hotel manager who feeds his tenants to a crocodile. As the singer/multi-instrumentalist said in an lengthy self-titled interview, “movies like that are more about the atmosphere they create than anything else…It’s a piece of art. If I could put it on my wall, I would. But I’m not really into the gore aspect of it. I prefer movies that are more like ghost stories, or beat-up horror films–the kind you collect on VHS tapes.”
While it’s unclear whether the trio is planning on releasing a new record, they’ll be playing a handful of shows in June, including stops in Brooklyn and the UK. Check out the dates and details below, along with one of Tare’s Down There videos…
