While it’s nearly impossible to make sense of all the music that floods our mail/inboxes every day—not to mention the shelves of our favorite record stores—we’re constantly looking for artists who make us stop what we’re doing and actually listen. Here’s one of them…
The Artist/Album: XXYYXX, XXYYXX (Relief in Abstract, 2012)
The Vibe: The 11 million (and counting) views XXYYXX’s “About You” video managed to generate in the last year got enough attention to obscure the simple fact that the Orlando producer’s album is fanfuckingtastic on its own. If only more ‘bedroom producers’ spent as much time stockpiling their samples and fine-tuning their hooks as Marcel Everett does here, via 13 distinct tracks that send devil worshipers, lost souls, drugged dancers and TLC’s “No Scrubs” chorus spiraling through a delirious wind tunnel that’s far more thought-provoking than his critic-baiting interviews suggest.
RIYL: Pitch-shifty vocal samples that actually have something to say; barely legal beat makers; Burial-related conspiracy theories
