Kindness couldn’t have written a better back story for “Who Do You Love,” a single featuring the solemn vocals of Robyn. Here’s the basic breakdown: Robyn, Kindness, and Robyn’s boyfriend Max were enjoying a drunken round of karaoke in Stockholm one night. Soon after they spilled onto the street, a local metalhead said he recognized the singer but refused to believe Robyn was actually Robyn.
According to a press release, “They ended up going to a nearby guitar store so she could prove her identity, and an impromptu jam session ensued.” Said metalhead is in the photo above, a screenshot from the song’s video (directed by recurring collaborator Daniel Brereton), which features portraits of family and friends who are close to the song’s central figures.
“This video and this song is about people and connection, and how you can identify who you are by those you love,” explains Kindness. “Those people say a hell of a lot about you. Daniel’s idea was a series of portraits of our closest friends and family—in a way, the most revealing portraits of us possible. There’s something about seeing all these people together, all these people that would do this for us—it makes the song make a little more sense, and a little more powerful.”
“There is so much information in the faces of people,” adds Robyn. “And some of the people I love more than anything are in this video together with people that mean the world to Adam, so for me it has many dimensions. But for anyone watching it has a beautiful way of communicating the different layers in the song.”
