Moloton co-founder Linus Hillborg has revealed the details surrounding his first solo record. Due out January 22nd, Magelungsverket repuroses many of the recordings from Orphan Works, an interactive art installation that paints a bleak picture of Stockholm — one that was beamed from either the not-so-distant future or another universe entirely.
According to a press release, “The game’s generative soundtrack interacts with the player’s haphazard navigation of a ceaseless digital void of factories, housing projects, run-down bars, ditches, and lakes. Displaced, uncanny narratives and depictions of both real and semi-fictional locations in Stockholm that could have existed — but do not — procures distinct sequences of sound constructed with the Buchla 200 system, programmed synthesis, bowed cymbals, metal clarinet, and tape machines.”
In the following exclusive, Hillborg presents one of the ravaged set pieces from his record — mise en scène music at its best….
The materials on ‘Magelungsverket’ are derived from the interactive, audiovisual installation (‘Orphan Works’) that I did last year. The installation basically consisted of a computer game world depicting my own mental image of a fractured Stockholm — based on faint impressions of the city’s being, how it could turn out, and how it could’ve turned out — in which the site-specific and ever-changing music was controlled by the player.
“Vårbergsobservatoriet” (“The Vårberg Observatory”) was one of those locations in this fictional, virtual Stockholm. I used to live in Vårberg some years back, and there is an artificial mountain there that was built from garbage scraps left behind after the underground metro system was constructed in the 1970s. The name of the track basically suggests that at some point there could have been a public observatory built on top of that mountain.
