Could it be? Could Jamie Lidell finally be returning to the nearly forgotten sound of his freaky-deaky peak, 2005’s funky but frantic Multiply LP? It certainly sounds that way on “why_ya_why”–yes the underscores are intentional–a pitch-shifting journey through a mine field of flustered horns, plastered pianos and mangled melodies.
Maybe that’s why Lidell’s new album (due out February 19th) is a self-titled affair: because it reclaims what’s rightfully his, a robotic middle ground between Motown and the moon.
