The Details: Mountains, Etching (Thrill Jockey, 2009)
A Short Review: Our favorite drone-on duo cut this 38-minute track in one live take and pressed it on 1,000 hand-stamped LPs last year. Now that every one-of-a-kind copy is gone, they’ve finally released it as a high-quality download. And while $9.99 may seem steep for one song, we’re happy to report that said song is as mesmerizing and meditative as Mountains’ proper albums. The only difference is that “Etching” unfolds like one drawn-out performance piece, a moment in time that takes the ambient experiments of Fennesz and Fripp & Eno to a logical extreme.
If you’re a sucker for this kind of stuff like us, you’ll stop and stare from the second it starts and you’ll love every last second of it. (Editor’s Note: We usually offer a free MP3 here, but since “Etching” is one track, we uploaded two Mountains videos to give you an idea of what you’re in for…)
