Evan Shornstein’s Photay project started with an early fascination with Aphex Twin but didn’t find its true footing until a highly influential trip to Guinea, West Africa. With a newfound grasp of polyrhythmic percussion sitting alongside samplers and software in the producer’s sonic palette, Shornstein was now ready and willing to write songs like “No Sass,” a wobbly walk home soundtracked by drunken horns, stutter-step beats and delirious vocal lines.
