Sonic Youth
Murray Street
(DGC/Interscope, 2002)
Now here’s a record that’s rarely referred to as one of Sonic Youth’s best, and yet we’ve kept coming back to it over the past decade. If you’re a longtime fan, this was the point where Jim O’Rourke joined, helping the band brush aside the disappointing detours of their previous album (2000’s NYC Ghosts & Flowers) for a masterful blend of winding guitar passages and pure experimentation. Kinda like what O’Rourke did for Wilco around the same time, only more explosive and full of fuck-yeah moments.
