Sigur Rós Reveal Details of ‘Aggressive’ Record, Share New Video

Sigur Rós

Sigur Rós

Just in time for the launch of their North American tour and the band’s biggest New York show yet–a stop at Madison Square Garden on Monday–Sigur Rós have announced their swiftly-recorded follow-up to last year’s Valtari album. Due out June 18th through XL, Kveikur was described as a “more aggressive” direction for the group in an Ask Me Anything interview a couple months ago. And sure enough, the lead single (“Brennisteinn”) sounds like a bitter, brutish struggle between Jónsi’s familiar falsetto and a decidedly heavy backdrop that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Fear Factory song. The loss of multi-instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson suddenly makes perfect sense–unlike the glacial grooves of ( ) or the major chord melodies of Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, the power trio version of Sigur Rós appears to be channeling the very same shock-to-your-system vibes that once made people pass out at their shows. Only now they’re apparently soundtracking the end of the world.
