“Doom soul” was a loose term bandied about the last Cold Specks LP, as if its darker shades of melancholy imagined a world where Motown records were produced by Sunn O))). Well the lead single from Al Spx’s upcoming Neuroplasticity LP literally gets heavy, sprinkling her spotlight-seizing harmonies with ghostly samples and storming off into the sunset like her recent collaborator Swans. As it turns out, that band’s fearsome frontman (Michael Gira) turns up on two new Cold Specks tracks. However, judging by the following early listen, she doesn’t really need him. The August 26th release is already edging into ecstatic territories on its own…
