While all of the songs on 2MR’s upcoming Harsh Riddims compilation help tell the Atlanta label’s story, one previously unreleased track holds a special place in its three-year-old heart: Cringe Machine’s “All the Same.” Sounding a bit like the Black Lips—the band’s tape-warped beginnings at least—it’s the beautiful yet broken work of Justin Bauman, who passed away recently. Here’s what the label had to say about the shadow-boxed song, followed by a streaming version of the comp’s other cuts from the Harsh Riddims archive. A release party is also happening at NYC’s Elvis Guesthouse tonight for just $5 a ticket…
Justin could play a guitar. He made it sound like anything but a guitar; he was beyond gifted in that department. He played all the instruments on ‘All the Same’, and produced it. The haze and the sludge at the end of the track is my favorite part. It’s a great exit for this lo-fi, twangy, pop vibe he was able to make. All the love and respect in his direction.
