The first Kode9 single in what feels like forever is a startling break from the smoke rings and rumbling rhythms of his records alongside the Spaceape, hitting the ground running with the shifting gears of “Xingfu Lu” and the bonkers breaks of “Kan Taken.” The latter is like a bass head’s version of a Matthew Herbert production, pairing seemingly random field recordings (a glass-tapping toast to better days, a close mic rendition of someone chomping their way through lunch) with drunken percussion patterns that appear to punch holes in your speaker cones.
