Now that Soundcloud-sourced remixes are more common than actual CD promos, it’s always refreshing to hear a ‘band’ like Young Galaxy take their latest 12-inch seriously. The air quotes are because the Montreal-based trio’s latest album (Ultramarine) was produced by one-half of the dearly missed Swedish duo Studio (Dan Lissvik) and is essentially another electro-pop effort from what was once more of an indie rock act.
The “Privileged Poor” single that dropped today hammers this point home by presenting the song in three strikingly different lights: wrapped in gauze-y shoegaze references (TOY), rewritten as a reflection of one’s own records (Factory Floor’s Dominic Butler) and edited as clean and calculated as one can be without coming off as downright cold (Lissvik).
