The Black Angels–easily one of self-titled‘s favorite psych bands–have set September 14 as the release date of their third full-length record, Phosphene Dream. According to a press release, the album is the first Black Angels effort developed outside of Austin. Cut over the course of six L.A. months with producer/mixer Dave Sardy (Black Mountain, Oasis, Wolfmother), it “shows off both sonically and musically a bold new direction.”
It’s also the first release on Blue Horizon, the recently-rebooted imprint of Richard Gottehrer (the co-founder of digital distribution giant The Orchard) and Seymor Stein (the CEO of Sire Records, and the focus of a Belle & Sebastian song). The music industry vets have worked with everyone from Madonna to Depeche Mode, so their vested interest in a bunch of bleak, blistering Texans is interesting to say the least.
