“I wanted this kind of sound, this kind of experience,” says producer Maayan Nidam, referring to her new The Waves & Us project with Markus Nikolaus and Louis McGuire. “We’re just going for it, day or night, not really caring about time at all… not repeating something we’ve heard before.”
Having already fallen for Nidam’s equally beguiling solo work, we wouldn’t expect anything less. That said, the trio’s debut 12” on Wolf + Lamb (due out July 7th on vinyl and the 14th digitally) is a completely unexpected collection of ashen post-punk music, brought together by McGuire’s liquified bass lines, Nikolaus’ roughed-up riffs and vapor-trailed vocals, and Nidam’s chain-linked electronics.
An LP of live wire takes is due out later this year; in the meantime, here is our premiere of “With Any Future,” along with a behind-the-scenes video that should give you a good idea of what to expect when The Waves and Us play Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn this Saturday…
