Check out all of our exclusive Unsound Festival content–including interviews, mixes, and quick profiles like the Kotra one below–here:
1. Describe your Unsound set in a couple sentences.
Hard to say yet as our collaboration with Black Rain is in process. But I guess you could expect some weird sound combination, as we both are from a bit different music fields. Something like deep heavy beats, distortions and pretty dark atmospheric layers can appear.
2. If you could book any living artist for a festival like Unsound, who would it be and why?
For my own Kvitnu Fest in Ukraine in previous years, I invited artists like Scorn, Pan Sonic, Pomassl, Mika Vainio, Staalplaat Soundsystem, Daniel Skoglund and Marek Choloniewski. It was more about inviting artists who created something new in electronic music back in time, or are doing it right now with their experiments. The latest edition of Kvitnu Fest only had artists from my label–Zavoloka, Sturqen, Plaster, Vitor Joaquim, v4w.enko, Dunaewsky69, Kotra–and it felt a bit different from inviting special headliners. It felt like a more personal way of building my own world.
3. What’s one record you’ve obsessed over lately, and why?
Can’t say that about any particular record; more like an artist or composer. The past month has centered around Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi–everything about him, from the way he created his music to all the mysteries and controversial stories about his life. Just try to listen to any of his works. You will be amazed.
4. How about a song you can’t stop playing?
It’s always changing. Recently it was “Double Connection (Sturqen remix)” by Plaster, “Striking Distance” by Joey Beltram, “Svitlo” by Zavoloka, and “Filaments and Voids” by Vitor Joaquim.
5. What are you working on now, and what can we expect from you in the rest of 2012?
Right now I’m in a special project in Krakow with Zavoloka and Dunaewsky69. It’s going to be a CD in a few months. There’s also a collaboration with Swiss artist Abs6 going on and my solo work should be out soon. Also lots of plans for my label Kvitnu.
Kotra and Black Rain perform a special Unsound LABs set at Issue Project Room on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
